Annual Status of Education Report 2012

Abstract

Reliable Estimates of the status of children’s schooling and basic learning at the district level; Measuring changes since last year and Interpreting these results to inform policy decisions at various levels.

The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) is a citizen led survey of quality of education that seeks to fill a gap in educational data by looking to provide a reliable set of data at the national level, that is comprehensive and, at the same time, easy to understand. 

ASER is a citizen led survey that is conducted with the help of government, civil society organizations, media, bilateral and multilateral agencies as well as other education sector stakeholders. The survey is household based and includes a sample size of 600 households per district; 30 randomly selected villages per district and 20 randomly selected households in each village.

Findings Include:
  • 22.8% of children in rural areas, aged 6 to 16, are out of school and out of these 18.1% have never been enrolled. 7% of the same age group is out of school in urban areas.
  • 59% of children in urban areas and 24% of those in rural area study in private schools.
  • For Urdu/Sindhi/Pashto 51% of children in Grade 5 can cope with Grade 2 level competency. Whereas in English and Arithmetic 52% and 56% of Grade 5 children respectively, can deal with Grade 2 level skills.
  • 50% of Grade 2 children in rural public sector schools are in multi-grade situation sharing teachers and space with more than one grade.
