Pakistan Millennium Development Goals Report 2010: Development Amidst Crisis

Abstract

An evaluation of the widening gap between performance and MDGs targets by highlighting various disruptions that have confronted the country since 2006

The purpose of this report is to gauge the transformations that have taken place since 2006 in Pakistan and the impact of such social and economic developments on the targets set by Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The report sheds light on various events since 2006 such as political turmoil faced by the country along with economic crises as a result of recession, the war that is initiated against the terrorist, natural disasters such as flood and the deteriorating security conditions faced by the citizens.  The combined impact of such factors is the ever increasing gap between performance and expectations and looming predictions that the country would not be able to achieve the eight MDGs by 2015.

The report separately evaluates the progress for each MDG and concludes that inability to achieve the desired goals stem from low economic growth, complex government structures, and lack of resources, environmental challenges and inability to establish targets. The study concludes that the gap between targets and performance continues to widen and therefore there is a need to show commitment towards achieving goals by mobilizing resources and establishing priorities. All MDGs are interlinked whereby an action can lead to multiplier effect and thus there is a need to develop strategies that are interdependent and interlinked to various goals at a time. Radical change by the government can still allow the country to achieve its MDGs by 2015.
