Role of Education in Globalization: A Case for Pakistan

Abstract

A review of the past initiatives in the education sector by government of Pakistan and remedial action required to benefit from globalization.

The study draws on various literatures and highlights the significant role played by education in enhancing learning opportunities and presenting citizens with the ability to exploit benefits of globalization. The study uses Pakistan as a case study and using surveys and other database indicates that the education sector within the country faces severe challenges in terms of low quality of education, gender disparity, insufficient teacher training, lack of monitoring controls, emphasis on rote learning and lack of resources. The education system is governed by private and public schools which also presents diversity within the sector and lack of coordination by these two major stakeholders further inhibits the sector from achieving progress. The report highlights that the current policy and framework of education has inherent weaknesses and stresses the importance of developing appropriate strategies based on priorities established.

The author recommends that gap analysis must be conducted to highlight areas of weakness and policies should be designed to address the highlighted issues. The policies must be designed after incorporating the views of various stakeholders and resources must be diverted towards enhancing the qualitative aspects of education. Committed leadership, delegation of responsibility and streamlining operations can significantly improve the quality of education within Pakistan and enable the country to exploit the opportunities presented by globalization.
