Determinants of School Effectiveness: A study at Punjab level

Abstract

Analyzing the key determinants that impact school effectiveness and developing a framework that will enable schools to raise effectiveness of the system.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the determinants of quality education that can enhance the effectiveness of education system in Pakistan and draft recommendations in light of research conducted. Questionnaire targeted at teachers and administrators from various districts of Punjab determined seventeen variables that impact school effectiveness and statistical analysis including mean, standard deviation, correlation and Cronbach Alpha revealed that all variables impact school effectives although professionalism, coordination and safe environment received highest preference from the participants. The results reveal that participants are well aware of the basic determinants of school effectiveness and believe that apart from three major determinants, schools should emphasize on professional development, training, continuous monitoring and evaluation of the teachers and students and motivation of students. Based on key research findings, the researchers hold that that four factor model based on school environment, professionalism, management and quality can vastly improve school effectiveness. The study recommends that emphasis must be placed on strong leadership and a decentralized education system that allows involvement of community. Effort must be expended in training teachers, improving infrastructure and designing a curriculum that meets the educational needs of the society at large.
