The Education System in Pakistan: Assessment of the National Education Census

Abstract

Providing a comprehensive review of the educational system within Pakistan and ascertaining the progress achieved till date.

The purpose of this study is to present a complete summary of the educational system within Pakistan and highlight the deteriorating condition as evidenced by the data collected from National Education Census (NEC) and National Education Management Information System (NEMIS). Analysis of data provided by NEC and NEMIS report reveals that Pakistan has not been able to achieve the universal primary enrollment rate and the current educational system hinders the transition of students from primary to secondary level. The report highlights the basic factor that have lead to decline in quality of education including untrained teachers, lack of basic physical infrastructure and improper teacher environment. The emergence of private schools within urban areas is also highlighted which indicates increasing diversity within the educational system of Pakistan.

The trends within data reveal that gender disparity exists at a primary level at all levels of basic education with boy’s enrollment rate being significantly higher than that of girls. However, at the secondary level the gender disparity does not exist which indicates high level of boy’s dropout rate. The analysis concludes that there is a need to improve the delivery system in order to enhance transition and reduce the rate of repetition within primary school to free up capacity along with bringing an improvement in teacher facilities to improve school environment.
